Can i hook up internet in my guest house from the computer in my main house?

I have internet through my cable. A surfboard modem. will it work if i get another modem and run the cable through a splitter?Can i hook up internet in my guest house from the computer in my main house?

What everyone failed to mention is that, in addition to a wireless router connected to your host pc, you might also need a wireless pci card on your desktop computer in the guest house (if it doesn't already have one) or if it's a laptop, you'll need a wireless card, unless it already has built-in wifi鈥nd to add to the last response by bostonianmo, you'll only need another account or another modem if you're attempting to use a cable splitter to run the cable to the guest house, which isn't the best way to get your guesthouse computer hooked up to the web. Get yourself a wireless router and if you're using a desktop in the guest house, make sure you also get a wireless pci card and install it. Depending on the distance between the two houses, make sure the router can broadcast a stong signal and the wireless pci card can pick up a signal from a decent distance. The alternative would be to run the CAT5 cable, like mo said, all the way from your modem inside the house to the guest house, but if the cable gets too long, you might lose some signal strength. That might be the cheaper way, but wireless is probably the best way to go. Good Luck.
You'll have to get a second internet account for that to work. Cable internet access it tied to the MAC address of your cable modem. Putting a second one on your cable won't work unless you get a second internet account.





How much distance are you talking about? You might be able to set up a directional wireless link. Or pull some CAT5 cable if it's less than 100 meters.

You don't need another modem. From your surf board modem, you can attached a 'wireless router'. Then your PC can hook up to the router via ethernet cable and the guest house via wireless.





Here's the way to do it.


1. Purchase a wireless router. Dlink or Netgear makes nice inexpensive ones.


2. Disconned the ethernet cable from your PC (the big phone cord) and plut it into the WAN port on the router.


3. Use another ethernet cable (the one that came with the router) and plug that into one of the LAN ports on the router and then into the PC where you 'unplugged' the other cord.


4. Turn on the router and let it boot up.


5. Turn on the PC and let it boot up.


6. You should be able to get out to the Internet. If you are having trouble, follow the directions that came with the router to diagnose. Get this working first.


7. Purchase a wireless card for the PC in the guest house. Install it per instructions.


8. Turn on Guest house PC and follow prompts to attached to your new wireless network.


9. You should be able to get to the Internet.





Be sure to read up on your wireless router and turn on the security features such as the firewall, NAT and WEP.
