Getting used to a house guest?

I have an elderly uncle moving in to my house. He's ill, but lively. I have a dachshund who is very wary of strangers (you know how dachshunds are). She goes berserk with strangers walking by....I can only imagine how she'd be with one in her territory! How long do you think it can take her to stop barking and snipping at him? How can I make this transition for her as quick and pleasant as possible without her disturbing my uncle?Getting used to a house guest?
Well, most of what I know, I learned from watching and reading the ';Dog Whisper's'; stuff, which I REALLY recommend. A couple ideas:

It's all in how you introduce them. So to have a good introduction

- Give your dog a LONG walk to get out excess energy (Make sure she is following you so she knows you're in charge)

- Introduce the two of them on neutral territory (Like a park) at first

- Let your uncle walk the dog (in the same, in charge manner), this tells her that he is in charge too

- Then the whole family goes home, with the dog being allowed to come into the house last (lets her know she is the pack follower, not leader)

With all this, she should accept the uncle in her home with minimal fuss. Of course, you also have to consistently not allow her to be a bully- the uncle has to be seen as ';in charge'; by the dog, and she will be sweet and loving.Getting used to a house guest?
i would suggest having your uncle start taking care of the dog, like giving it food, patting it, grooming it. Soon the dog will understand that your uncle isn't a stranger but a person who it can trust.

You may also want to give your uncle some treats so that he can carry around with him so he can also train the dog whenever he's around, gaining more trust with the dog.

good luck
If your uncle wants to get along with your dog, he'll have to make some effort to befriend your dog. Give him several small treats to carry around with him in his pocket, and ask him to feed your dog every once and a while. Soon, your dog will be in love. ;)
